🛡️ Road Safety Rules

👣
Use the Pavement
Always walk on the pavement or footpath, away from moving cars. If there is no footpath, walk on the right side facing oncoming traffic.
🇿🇲 Zambia Law
🦓
Cross at Zebra Crossings
Always cross the road at a zebra crossing or traffic light. Stop, look left, look right, look left again — then cross only when it is safe!
⚡ Very Important
👀
Look Both Ways
Before crossing any road, look LEFT first (traffic comes from the left in Zambia), then RIGHT, then LEFT again. Never cross without looking!
🇿🇲 Drive Left
📵
No Phones While Walking
Never look at your phone or listen to music on headphones while crossing the road. You need full attention to stay safe!
💡 Smart Choice
🌙
Be Seen at Night
Wear bright or reflective clothing when walking at night. Carry a torch if possible. Drivers need to see you to keep you safe on Zambia’s roads!
🌟 Stay Visible
🏃
Never Play Near Roads
Do not play football or chase friends near busy roads. Use playgrounds, open fields, or school yards far from traffic for your games.
⚠️ Stay Away
🚌
Bus Safety
Wait for the minibus to fully stop before getting on or off. After getting off, wait for it to leave before crossing the road. Never rush!
🚍 Minibus Tips

Hold an Adult’s Hand
Young children should always hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road or walking near busy traffic on Great East Road or Cairo Road.

🚦 Traffic Light Colours

Click a light to learn what it means! 👇

🔴 RED — STOP! All traffic must stop. As a pedestrian, do NOT cross the road.
🟡 YELLOW — GET READY Cars slow down. Get ready to stop or go. Wait — do not rush!
🟢 GREEN — GO SAFELY You may cross — but still look both ways first! Cars can still turn.

⚡ Lusaka Traffic Tip

  • 🛣️Lusaka has many traffic lights on Cairo Road, Great East Road, and Church Road — learn them all!
  • ⚠️Not all roads in Zambia have traffic lights. At unmarked junctions, always stop and check carefully.
  • 🚶Even on GREEN, check for turning vehicles — they must give way to pedestrians.
  • 🌧️During the rainy season, roads are slippery and cars take longer to stop. Be extra careful!

🚨 What To Do After a Road Accident

  • 🛑Stay calm. Move yourself to safety away from traffic — do not stand in the road.
  • 📞Call for help. Ask a trusted adult to call 999 (Police) or 991 (Ambulance) immediately.
  • 🙅Do not move injured people unless they are in danger. You could make injuries worse.
  • 🗣️Tell an adult you trust — a teacher, parent, or community elder — right away.
  • 📍Remember your location. If in Lusaka, note the street name or a nearby landmark to tell the emergency services.
  • 🧠Know your address. Learn your home address and phone number by heart so you can always get help.
