About Zambia Road Safety Trust
Zambia Road Safety Trust is a Zambian road safety organisation working to reduce road deaths and injuries through practical programmes, policy support, training, advocacy, research and partnerships.
We work with government, companies, donors, councils, transport operators, schools, universities, insurers, media and communities to make road safety a visible and measurable part of national development.
Who We Are
ZRST is based in Lusaka and works on road safety issues that affect people across Zambia: children walking to school, motorcycle riders, pedestrians, cyclists, public transport passengers, drivers, fleet operators and families affected by road crashes.
Our role is to help partners move from concern to practical action. We support work that can be planned clearly, delivered responsibly and reported honestly.
Why ZRST Exists
Road crashes are not random events that Zambia must simply accept. Many are linked to known risks: unsafe speed, poor road design, weak pedestrian protection, unsafe school zones, fatigue, alcohol, vehicle condition, weak fleet systems and poor post-crash response.
ZRST exists because these risks need organised work. They need public leadership, technical input, community trust, corporate responsibility and long-term funding.
Our work is rooted in a direct belief: every preventable road death is a failure of systems, not only of individual behaviour.
Our Position
ZRST positions itself as Zambia’s road safety implementation partner for government, companies, donors and communities.
This means we do not only call for change. We help design, deliver and measure programmes that reduce risk on the ground.
How We Work
We identify road safety risk
We look at where people are exposed to danger: school gates, junctions, corridors, bus stops, markets, walking routes, fleet operations and motorcycle activity areas.
We work with the right partners
Road safety cannot be solved by one organisation. ZRST works with public agencies, councils, companies, schools, communities and technical partners so that each actor has a clear role.
We design practical responses
Our work may include training, audits, risk reviews, public education, school-zone support, rider safety, fleet safety systems, visibility work, community engagement and policy support.
We document and report
Partners need to know what their support achieved. ZRST aims to document activities, reach, lessons, risks addressed and next steps.
Our Work Areas
ZRST works across safe school zones, motorcycle safety, fleet and driver safety, safer streets and corridors, walking and cycling safety, road safety policy, post-crash response, training, research and technical support.
The detailed description of each flagship programme is available on our Programmes & Impact page.
What Makes ZRST Different
ZRST combines national road safety advocacy with practical implementation experience. We understand the public policy environment, but we also understand what happens at a school gate, a bus stop, a junction, a fleet yard or a crash scene.
That combination matters. Road safety fails when it remains only technical, only political or only charitable. It works when technical action, public will, funding and local trust meet.
Our Values
Human life first
Road safety is about people, not only roads and vehicles.
Evidence over noise
Strong claims must be backed by records, reports or verified data.
Practical action
We value work that can be seen, delivered and assessed.
Responsible partnership
Visibility must never replace the road safety purpose of a project.
Work With ZRST
