YANGO Zambia, in partnership with the Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST), on Saturday 4th October officially launched the Safer Journeys to School Initiative at Arthur Wina Primary School in Chilenje South. The launch marks a major milestone in advancing child safety and responsible driving around schools in Lusaka.
As part of the initiative, Yango introduced a new in-app safety feature that alerts and reminds drivers to reduce speed when entering school zones. The event was graced by Eng. Nkumbu Siame, Director of Transport (representing the Minister of Transport and Logistics), Chewe Kabanda, Country Head of Yango Zambia, Mr. Daniel Mwamba, Executive Director of ZRST, and Mrs. Monica Sondashi, Headteacher of Arthur Wina Primary School. Stakeholders from the Road Transport and Safety Agency , Road Development Agency, Lusaka City Council , and several participating schools also attended, all united under one vision: safer journeys for every child.
Through the Safer Journeys to School Initiative, Yango and ZRST have implemented critical safety infrastructure at five Lusaka schools, including raised zebra crossings, speed humps, 30km/h school zone signage, and new road markings — making school routes safer and more predictable for learners.
The beneficiary schools include:
1️⃣ Mumuni Primary School
2️⃣ Twatasha Primary School
3️⃣ New Mandevu Primary School
4️⃣ Arthur Wina Primary School
5️⃣ Chilenje South Secondary School
In addition, over 8,000 learners have already benefited from road safety education provided by ZRST, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to travel safely every day.
During the launch, Yango Country Head, Chewe Kabanda, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation with purpose: “Technology should make life safer for everyone. With this new school zone safety alert in the Yango app, we’re helping drivers stay aware and slow down where it matters most, near our children.”
ZRST Executive Director, Mr. Daniel Mwamba, praised Yango’s leadership and reaffirmed ZRST’s role in community implementation: “This partnership shows what’s possible when technology meets community impact. Together, we’re saving lives and creating safer environments for learners across Zambia.”
Together, Yango and ZRST are building safer roads, stronger partnerships, and a brighter future for Zambia’s children.
