PRESS RELEASE
Lusaka, Zambia – January 14, 2025 – The Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST) is deeply concerned by the continued loss of life on our roads, despite a slight decrease in the overall number of road traffic accidents in 2024. While the Zambia Police Service reported a drop in accidents compared to the previous year, fatalities have tragically increased. This stark reality underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and a renewed commitment to road safety awareness.
The 2024 statistics paint a concerning picture. While the total number of accidents declined, 1,804 were fatal, resulting in the tragic loss of 2,199 lives. This represents a significant increase compared to 2023. Furthermore, thousands sustained serious injuries, highlighting the devastating impact of these accidents on individuals, families, and communities.
Lusaka Province, unfortunately, continues to bear the brunt of the problem, recording the highest number of accidents. While rural provinces may see lower accident figures, the limited availability of emergency response systems in these areas exacerbates the impact of any incident.
The toll on children is particularly alarming. In 2024, 1,310 young lives were affected, with over 200 children tragically losing their lives. Many more suffered serious injuries. These young casualties, often pedestrians or passengers, underscore the critical need to prioritize the safety of our most vulnerable road users.
Human error remains a leading cause of accidents, with excessive speed, misjudging clearance distances, and disregarding traffic rules among the most common offenses.
While acknowledging the efforts of the Zambia Police Service, including intensified patrols during peak periods, ZRST believes a more comprehensive approach is necessary. This includes:
- Strengthening road safety education: Expanding public awareness campaigns to reach drivers, passengers, and pedestrians, with a specific focus on children.
- Enhancing enforcement: Increasing the presence of law enforcement in high-risk areas and ensuring strict adherence to traffic laws.
- Improving infrastructure: Prioritizing pedestrian safety with initiatives like safe crossings, speed humps, and improved signage.
- Leveraging technology: Utilizing speed cameras and surveillance systems to deter reckless driving.
- Fostering collaboration: Strengthening partnerships with the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) and other stakeholders to implement effective road safety initiatives.
ZRST remains committed to advocating for safer roads in Zambia. We urge all road users to prioritize safety, adhere to traffic rules, and drive responsibly. By working together, we can create a safer road environment for everyone.
