Sexual Harassment in Public Transport

Zambia Road Safety Trust proudly joined the conversation at the EMPOWER PROJECT SEMINAR in Cape Town, addressing a critical issue too many people face especially women and girls: sexual harassment in public transport. Held at the Protea Hotel by Marriott, Water Front Breakwater Lodge, this event was all about finding real, human solutions to keep our communities safe.

We had the honor of presenting how Zambia is fighting back with targeted actions:
Listening to the people: We’re collecting real stories from public transport users to drive meaningful change
Gender-sensitive leadership: Training transport authorities to create safer, more inclusive spaces
Safety by design: Rethinking buses, stops, and routes to prioritize personal safety
Uniting for impact: Bringing together everyone – formal and informal transport sectors – for lasting change
Smart security: Boosting safety with innovative policing and surveillance
Training drivers & conductors: Giving them the skills to protect passengers
Public awareness campaigns: Shining a light on the issue and sparking conversation
Engaging stakeholders: Hosting workshops to ensure everyone’s on board, from decision-makers to grassroots leaders

A powerful tool we’ve leaned on? The SHE CAN Tool. It’s packed with templates, guides, and resources that have helped us take these ideas from concept to action.

This journey is about more than policies and campaigns—it’s about making sure every person who steps onto a bus feels safe. And we won’t stop until that’s the reality across Africa.

Together, we can make public transport safe for everyone.
