Zambia Road Safety Trust Advocates for Adoption of Road to Zero Strategy by Zambian Government

The Zambia Road Safety Trust is calling on the Zambian government to adopt the Road to Zero strategy, which aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries on roads in the country to zero by 2050. The strategy includes a range of measures to improve road safety, including improving infrastructure, encouraging the use of safer vehicles, and promoting safe behaviors. It also places a particular focus on supporting vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

“As the leading organization working to improve road safety in Zambia, we believe that the Road to Zero strategy offers a comprehensive and evidence-based approach to reducing road deaths and serious injuries in our country,” said Serenity Phiri, Executive Director of the Zambia Road Safety Trust. “We urge the Zambian government to adopt this strategy as a key part of its efforts to improve road safety for all road users.”

The Road to Zero strategy has been successful in reducing road deaths and serious injuries in other countries around the world, and the Zambia Road Safety Trust believes that it can have similar success in Zambia. The strategy includes a number of specific measures, such as improving infrastructure to make roads safer for all users, encouraging the use of safer vehicles through incentives and regulations, and promoting safe behaviors through education and awareness campaigns. It also includes a focus on supporting vulnerable road users, who are more at risk of serious injury or death in a collision.

The Zambia Road Safety Trust is committed to working with the Zambian government and other partners across the transport sector, including local authorities, transport operators, and safety organizations, to implement the Road to Zero strategy in Zambia. It will also engage with the public to ensure that the strategy reflects the needs and concerns of all road users.

“We believe that the adoption of the Road to Zero strategy by the Zambian government would be a major step forward in our efforts to improve road safety in our country,” Phiri said. “We urge the government to give serious consideration to this important strategy as it works to make our roads safer for all.”
