STREETS FOR KIDS PROJECT

The Streets for Kids Project in Lusaka, Zambia, is a transformative initiative aimed at creating safer, more inclusive streets for children and enhancing social connections within the community.

The project aimed to create a safe and inclusive street environment that prioritized the needs of schoolchildren, caregivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Various measures were implemented, including improving road infrastructure and introducing traffic safety initiatives, with the ultimate goal of reducing road accidents and fostering a secure atmosphere for children to navigate their surroundings.

In addition, the project sought to contribute to the overall walkability of Burma, Luwembu, and adjacent areas by developing a more livable and sustainable urban environment. This included creating seating areas and socializing opportunities for children, caregivers, and young people. The streets were designed to be more accessible and enjoyable for pedestrians and cyclists, encouraging active forms of transportation and contributing to an improved quality of life within the community.

A crucial aspect of the project was its commitment to fostering community participation and ownership. Extensive engagement and consultation efforts were undertaken, particularly with local community members, including women and schoolchildren, to ensure that their voices and needs were not only heard but also incorporated into the project. The collaborative approach involved stakeholders such as the Global designing Cities Initiative, Lusaka City Council, Road development Agency, National Heritage Conservation Commission, Chilenje Primary School, and Smart Kids Academy, emphasizing a holistic and community-centered strategy. This approach ensured that the project aligned with the community’s values and aspirations, promoting a sense of ownership and collective responsibility.

Through these initiatives, the project promoted active mobility among 2,200 local residents and encouraged them to engage in walking and cycling as sustainable modes of transportation. .
