Car Free Day Celebration in Lusaka by ZRST

Date: October 19, 2024

Today, the Zambia Road Transport and Safety Agency (ZRTSA) hosted a vibrant Car Free Day event at the Old Statehouse, located on Monument Lane off Burma Road. This initiative aimed to promote walking and cycling, encouraging citizens to embrace alternative modes of transport as part of a broader movement toward safer and cleaner streets.

In partnership with various organizations, including Safe Steps, Lusaka City Council, Prudential, the Lions Club, RTSA, and numerous dedicated volunteers, the event successfully drew a diverse crowd. People of all ages, especially the youth, participated enthusiastically, showcasing their bicycles and engaging in playful activities in the streets, unencumbered by the usual hustle and bustle of vehicular traffic.

The atmosphere was electric as families and friends came together, enjoying the freedom of movement that a car-free environment offers. Children raced their bicycles, parents joined in games, and laughter filled the air, highlighting the community spirit fostered by this event. The streets transformed into a safe haven for pedestrians and cyclists alike, illustrating the positive impact of reducing car dependency for a day.

This celebration of Car Free Day is more than just a fun event; it symbolizes a collective commitment to enhancing road safety and promoting healthier lifestyles within our communities. By encouraging walking and cycling, we take vital steps towards reducing traffic congestion, lowering pollution levels, and improving public health.

As we reflect on today’s activities, it is clear that the efforts of ZRTSA and its partners are paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future. Let us continue to join hands in promoting safety and sanity on our roads, ensuring that our communities remain vibrant and accessible for everyone. Together, we can create a culture of safety and awareness that benefits all citizens, now and for generations to come.

Let’s keep the momentum going and make every day a step towards safer streets and healthier communities!
