Mapping for Safer Journeys

Great news! ZRST is proud to announce its entry into the global mapping community to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through open mapping. As a first step, we will be working to identify high-risk road networks and pedestrian areas, enhance disaster and emergency response, and promote Safe and Healthy Streets for Children, Youth and Climate.

Join us on this journey of a thousand miles towards Mapping for Safer Journeys and a more sustainable future for all on HOT’s Tasking Manager at: https://tasks.hotosm.org/projects/14679.

The Mapping for Safer Journeys project seeks to enhance road safety and emergency response in Solwezi, a town located in the North Western Province of Zambia. Solwezi is situated in a mineral-rich region and is home to several large copper and cobalt mines, including Kansanshi Mine, which is one of the largest copper mines in Africa.

The area has a population estimated to be around 115,000 people (ZSA, 2020 Census) which is characterized by a high volume of vulnerable road users, due to the presence of several large copper and cobalt mines, such as the Kansanshi Mine.

The project will leverage remote mappers using satellite imagery and other data sources to create detailed and up-to-date maps of the road network infrastructure and buildings in the selected region.

Through the tasking manager, ZRST will work with local authorities, school communities, principals, and stakeholders to evaluate school zones and identify areas with a high risk of traffic injuries.
