On October 29, 2024, the Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST), in collaboration with key stakeholders, successfully conducted a workshop for the Mobility Snapshots Campaign at the ZRST offices. Funded by the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, this initiative focuses on addressing critical safety issues at the bustling intersection of Independence Avenue and Dedan Kimathi in Lusaka.
The workshop was under the theme: Changing the Way We See Our Streets and it
served as a vital platform to discuss significant concerns affecting road safety in Lusaka, specifically:
1. High Vehicle and Pedestrian Traffic Sharing Unsafe Road Space: The intersection sees a high volume of both vehicles and pedestrians, often resulting in dangerous interactions.
2. Lack of Designated Crossing Areas for Pedestrians: Without proper crossing zones, pedestrians are left vulnerable to traffic.
3. Unsafe Speeds Due to the Absence of a 30 km/h Limit: The lack of speed regulation poses a serious risk to all road users.
4. Blocked Footpaths Restricting Safe Pedestrian Movement: Obstructions on sidewalks make it difficult for pedestrians to navigate safely.
5. Mixed-Use Road Space: The absence of clear separation between motor vehicles and pedestrians increases the risk of accidents.
The Mobility Snapshots Campaign aims to: Identify Dangers on the Roads: Prioritizing intervention points for immediate action; Empower Communities: Educating residents about their right to safe mobility and the importance of advocating for safer roads. Influence Decision Makers: Urging authorities to take swift action to safeguard pedestrians and improve overall road safety.
Our presentation underscored the urgent need to address these risks, not only at the Independence Avenue and Dedan Kimathi intersection but also at similar hotspots across Lusaka. The data shared emphasized the importance of implementing pedestrian-friendly infrastructure to protect all road users and enhance overall safety.
During the workshop, we highlighted the proven benefits of road safety measures, which include: Improved Health: Safer roads contribute to reduced accidents and injuries, promoting the well-being of all road users. Positive Climate Outcomes: Enhanced road safety can lead to reduced vehicle emissions and better air quality. Social Equity: Ensuring safe mobility for all, especially vulnerable groups such as pedestrians and cyclists, fosters inclusive communities.
An infographic illustrated the positive impact of reduced speed zones and safe pedestrian crossings, demonstrating how these measures can lead to safer and more livable streets for everyone.
In a powerful show of unity, stakeholders made strong pledges to *Commit to Act*. This collective commitment aims to improve the Independence Avenue and Dedan Kimathi intersection while prioritizing safe mobility across Lusaka. These steps are vital in creating safer streets for all road users.
The workshop was insightful and interactive, featuring participation from a diverse array of stakeholders, including: Government Institutions: Office of the Town Clerk, Lusaka City Council, Road Transport and Safety Agency, Zambia Police Headquarters, Zambia Agency for Persons with Disability. Non-Governmental Organizations: Public Passengers Drivers Association, United Nations Development Programme, Road Safety Ambassadors, Safety for People on the Move, Passengers Transport Cooperative, Public and Commuters’ Rights Association of Zambia, Passengers, Pedestrians, and Cyclists Association.
Together, we made resolutions to strengthen efforts toward creating safe and accessible streets for all road users in Lusaka.
